The Challenge: Engineering for Extreme Environments

The LCpro T Advanced Portable Photosynthesis System is a sophisticated instrument designed by engineers for critical field research. It enables scientists to measure gas exchange and photosynthetic activity in real-world settings. With an internal battery offering up to 16 hours of operation, the LCpro T is built for long-duration, off-grid use. The system measures and controls the environment around a leaf or soil sample. This provides precise data for a range of ecological and agricultural studies. This functionality enables the device to be routinely deployed in environments where it is exposed to significant wear and tear, including direct sunlight, moisture, dust, and extreme temperatures.

ADC knew that an inferior overlay would lead to several problems. The graphics could fade or scratch, making the display and buttons difficult to read. The adhesive could fail, causing the overlay to peel and expose the sensitive electronics underneath. Additionally, the material itself may crack due to prolonged exposure to UV radiation. Any of these failures would compromise the device’s function, erode user trust, and lessen the product’s value. The company required a manufacturing partner capable of creating a custom solution that was not only professional but also durable enough to withstand harsh field conditions.

The Solution: A Partnership in Precision Manufacturing

ADC turned to RH Technical Industries, a specialist in high-performance membrane keypads and durable graphic overlays. The partnership began with a detailed analysis of the LCpro T’s operational environment. This analysis guided every decision, from material selection to the final manufacturing process.

The first key decision was choosing the right material. To ensure exceptional durability, RH recommended a 0.2 mm polyester with a lightly textured finish. We selected this material for its impact resistance and excellent optical clarity. Additionally, it resists a wide range of chemicals and solvents, preventing discolouration over time.

To ensure the graphics would never fade or rub off, RH used reverse printing. We use a method where we print the design on the back of the transparent polyester film. When the overlay is attached to the device, the ink is protected on the inside by the durable outer layer of the polyester, making the graphics impervious to physical abrasion, UV light, and chemicals.

The LCpro T’s control panel needed a perfect fit. RH achieved the required precision using a die-cutting process, ensuring each overlay had an ideal fit with the underlying components. This design, with no surface gaps, prevents debris from entering the device. The main button has a raised pad with an embossed key. An anti-glare window protects the display screen.

Finally, a custom adhesive system was developed to provide a secure and permanent bond. A standard adhesive would be vulnerable to the thermal expansion and contraction the device would experience when moving between a laboratory and field research. RH’s high-performance adhesive was formulated to withstand these temperature changes and resist moisture, ensuring the overlay would remain securely bonded to the casing.
